Winter white wildlife in Dumfries & Galloway

Wrap up warm this winter and look out for white wildlife spectacles.

Dumfries & Galloway is an ornithologist’s paradise, and places such as WWT Caerlaverock and Mersehead Nature Reserve make it easy to get up close. Why not join an expert on a guided walk to find out more about the birds and wildlife?

Every year, from September until early May, barnacle geese return every year from Norway to winter on the wetlands of the Solway Firth. Dumfries and Galloway plays host to tens of thousands of geese: barnacle, pink-footed, greylag, brent and Greenland white-fronted.

View geese wintering on a trail of roosting sites - Wigtown Bay LNR, Loch Ryan, NTS Threave, Loch Ken / RSPB Ken-Dee Marshes, RSPB Mersehead and WWT Caerlaverock with the ‘wild goose chase’.

The graceful red kite has been successfully reintroduced to Galloway, in an area around Loch Ken. The Galloway Red Kite Trail takes a circular route through some impressive scenery, designed to take you closer to this elusive raptor with observation points and interpretation boards.

Visit the feeding station at Bellymack Farm, near Laurieston where up to 30 have been seen at once - feeding time, 2pm.
