Catch a glimpse of a white-faced barn owl

With heartshaped face, buff back and wings and pure white under-parts, the barn owl is a distinctive and much loved countryside bird.

Catch a glimpse of this graceful bird in flight as it hunts for prey; dusk and dawn are the main peaks of activity.

Although barn owls are not woodland birds, they will use woodland edges, and large clearings - especially those with long grass - for foraging.

Projects in Tayside, Clackmannanshire, Stirling and Fife, are currently underway to boost the barn owl population, including simple measures to improve habitats and provide nestboxes. So take a stroll in the countryside of lowland Scotland this winter and you could well be rewarded with views of a resident owl.
