Spot white-tailed eagles in the west of
Scotland
See the white-tailed eagle, or sea eagle, all
year round in the west of Scotland. With distinctive white tails
and brown plumage, they are an amazing sight in the winter sky.
Scottish white-tailed eagles prefer sheltered
lochs or sea lochs rather than exposed coastal sites and prefer to
nest in trees rather than on cliffs. The adult white-tailed eagle's
huge size and pure white tail are very distinctive.
The small population of white-tailed eagle in
Britain is found only in the highlands and islands of the west of
Scotland. Visit the likes of Sunart Oakwood and Inverarish in the
Highlands, Portree in Skye, Glen Aros in Mull and Crinan
Harbour in Argyll and Bute.
Scotland's breeding population of white-tailed
eagle is celebrating two landmark records for 2009 - the highest
number of breeding pairs and more young successfully fledged in the
programme's history. There are now more than 200 individual sea
eagles in Scotland.
One of the most famous spots for looking out
for white-tailed eagles is the Isle of Mull in the Inner Hebrides.
In 1970s a full-scale reintroduction program was launched that
brought young eagles from Norway and in 1985 the first Scottish sea
eagle chick hatched successfully - the first for more than 70
years.
Since then the number of established pairs has
steadily risen, though only about 20 pairs have successfully raised
chicks.
Take the short ferry journey from Oban and
witness for yourself this major success story.
