Get close to winter white nature

Wildlife is everywhere in Orkney, from fantastic bird watching to an abundance of sealife around the island’s stunning and unspoilt coastline.

In winter, the fields and water-margins echo to the thousands of geese, waterfowl, whooper swans, and other visitors, while a walk along a peaceful stretch of sand will more than likely attract the attentions of a curious seal.

Grey and common seals are abundant around the island. With some 25,000 grey seals in Orkney waters, you have a good chance of spotting one. Baby grey seals are identifiable as they are born with a lovely silky white coat.

Look out for harbour porpoise, which are found in shallow seas - particularly around the Northern Isles. These graceful creatures are a delight to spot from the shore.

And the more patient onlooker will be rewarded with views of an elusive otter foraging for food amongst kelp and rocks along the shore. These mammals are notoriously secretive so find a comfortable spot and prepare to sit quietly.
